I’m proud to be working with CVS Pharmacy to help spread the word about #BetterHealthMadeEasy, how to #FindYourHealthy and #DiscoverCVS. All opinions expressed are my own, and all product claims or program details shared should be verified at CVS.com or with the appropriate manufacturers.
What is Medication Adherence
Medication adherence refers to whether patients take their medications as prescribed (e.g., twice daily), as well as whether they continue to take prescribed medication. This involves many factors including getting a first prescription filled, remembering to take medications on time and understanding the directions.
One of the most crucial aspects of providing care to older adults is Medication Adherence. If you find your parent or loved one is no longer appropriately administrating their medication or if they are forgetting to take their medicine it may be time for you to step in to manage it for them.
Why is it Important?
Medication non-adherence leads to 125,000 deaths and 10 to 20 percent of hospital and nursing home admissions each year. Studies show that a third of patients do not take their medications as prescribed and nearly 50 percent of patients with chronic conditions stop taking their medications within the first year of diagnosis.
Due to the number of medications and administration instructions, it may be difficult to take over as their medication manager. In our previous post, Supporting the Family Caregiver: CVS Pharmacy Designs a Digital App that Benefits both the Older Adult and the Family Caregiver we discussed how CVS Pharmacy has made it their mission to support the family caregiver in taking on this challenging role.
Better Health Made Easy
As America’s leading retail pharmacy with more than 9,700 locations nationwide including pharmacies now in Target locations, CVS Pharmacy takes medication adherence seriously.
CVS Pharmacy is rolling out the ScriptPath Program throughout 2018 all across the United States to ensure everyone has access to medication adherence tools. CVS understands how busy lives can get and wants to ensure that you have the support you need available to you.
They have created a mobile app that makes the filling and refilling prescriptions easier. Also, patients can set up medication reminders within the app to help alert them when it’s time for their next dose.
Is your loved one still able to manage their medication? Great! CVS Pharmacy has revamped their prescription bottles, so they are now larger print and color-coded symbols based on the times each drug is to be taken. You can even print out a medication schedule that will match the prescription bottle. Making the process so much easier for your loved one!
Find You’re Healthy
As a family caregiver, your daily routine will consist of a hundred to-dos. The added stress and burden can often leave caregivers feeling stressed, and will leave little time for you to manage your own health in the process.
The most important thing you can do as a caregiver is to take care of yourself first, so that you are able to provide the best care for the older adults in your life. Finding your own health can be difficult, but that doesn’t mean you are in this alone, CVS is here to help!
CVS Pharmacist offer counseling (in-person or by phone) to help patients stay on track. In fact, research shows that face-to-face counseling by a pharmacist is two to three times more effective at increasing patient adherence than other interventions.
